Neumarkt (Upper Palatinate), March 4, 2008. The German Bionorica Group, the leader in sales of herbal medicines (phytopharmaceuticals) available only in pharmacies, increased its earnings by almost double in the last three accounting years. In 2007, too, the market leader clearly exceeded the results of 2006, the hitherto most successful accounting year. According to information provided by Bionorica itself the company achieved a net turnover that had increased by 15.6% to EUR 114.9 million (2006: EUR 99.4 million). On foreign markets, in particular, Bionorica, which has won several innovation awards, achieved growth rates far above the market conditions, both in terms of sales and turnover of plant-based pharmaceuticals.
Prof. Dr. Michael Popp, CEO of Bionorica AG:
"Our quantum leap from the earlier empirical medicine to herbal pharmaceuticals with meanwhile scientifically confirmed quality and action dimensions is paying off. More and more patients, doctors and pharmacists meanwhile recognize the advantages of our phytopharmaceuticals which are highly effective but, unlike synthetic chemical medicines are low on side effects."The Bionorica company, which for years has been investing a large portion of its turnover in the research into the healing powers of nature and clinical trials, further increased its market shares in Germany to a total of 13% (2006: 12.7%) in terms of sales from pharmacies in important core segments. Although since 2004 patients in Germany have had to pay for herbal medicines themselves, Germany’s bestselling phytopharmaceutical, Sinupret, increased its market share yet again. Bionorica, which supplies almost all of Germany’s pharmacies, achieved similarly positive developments with its respiratory tract remedies such as Bronchipret and Tonsipret, immune system preparations such as Imupret and gynecologicals such as Mastodynon. On the whole, Bionorica AG, which manufactures almost only finished medicinal products within the Bionorica Group, increased its turnover figures to EUR 105.6 million compared with the previous year (2006: EUR 92.1 million).
Bionorica’s respiratory tract remedies and "nature’s chain of defense" are championed by top soccer coach Felix Magath, the Sinupret Ice Tigers from Nürnberg – who play in the German Ice Hockey League – and the Russian national ski jumping team.
Particularly in eastern Europe, the phytopharmaceuticals specialist that proves the quality, action dimensions and safety of its products by means of a research and manufacturing philosophy unique the world over, achieved gains far ahead of the market development there. In Popp’s words:
"There are pharmaceuticals markets where, unlike in Germany, there is equality of opportunity for pharmaceuticals, where patients and doctors choose the greatest possible benefit with the fewest side effects and the lowest treatment costs, i.e. rationally. And we profit from that." For instance in 2007 Bionorica’s turnover in Russia increased by more than 42% in comparison with the previous year – and therefore in relation to the entire pharmaceutical competition by a factor of almost four! Bionorica achieved similarly large gains, also measured in comparison with the competition, for instance in Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. On the whole, the revenues in the principal foreign market, eastern Europe, increased by some 47%. Besides Sinupret, above all urologicals such as Canephron contributed decisively towards the company’s success.
Bionorica supplies a total of 14 phytopharmaceuticals for the indications respiratory tract, immune system, gynecologicals and urology, and is researching at full steam on innovations in various indications. Applications for marketing authorization are planned for additional preparations from 2009 on. Bionorica, which works worldwide with leading scientists, hospitals, universities and research facilities, seeks to become even more global and is now concentrating on the pharmaceuticals markets in the USA, China, Japan, India and Brazil. The German market leader sees rapidly achievable potential above all in the USA where the number of serious adverse drug events has tripled in eight years. Above all to protect children, the US regulatory authority FDA issued a warning at the end of last year against using synthetic, chemically based medicines in children under six years of age.
With targeted campaigns at home and abroad Bionorica seeks to continue to increase awareness among doctors, pharmacists and patients for plant-based medicines with new quality and action dimensions and the, in its opinion, "world’s best pharmacy". For the growth expected in 2008 and in the years to come the company intends to greatly increase its staff again which grew by a total of 14.5% in 2007 (749 employees).
Bionorica demands in particular that Germany’s politicians make obligatory a patient information leaflet for consumers stating that certain herbal pharmaceuticals are pharmacologically and clinically tested special extracts. In this way Bionorica seeks to distinguish its products from those for which a therapeutic effect is suggested but cannot be proven.
